Forking out hard earned cash on a new piece of tackle can be influenced by many things but we thought the best way to find out if something is any good was to ask an independent, long term owner who has used it on numerous fishing trips. Graham Nicol has owned a Nautilus NV for a few years now and tells us if he thinks it is any good.
Reels can be compared to cars. You have the budget end which are basic but generally do the job. Then you have the fleet group that likewise carry out their function satisfactorily but have a few more refinements to assist. Finally you have the luxury section which complete their role perfectly both in style and in complete confidence. Nautilus reels are positioned comfortably in the last category benefiting from precision engineering and sublime looks achieving superior performance in comparison to its competitors (Tibor, Abel and Loop come to mind).
What sets them apart? The first is the drag system which would stop an elephant in its tracks. Not only is this made with the highest grade materials but it is also sealed which eases one's concerns when either the reel is dropped or one is fishing saltwater flats and sand tries to get into the mechanism. It just can’t happen. The second is using titanium and ceramics both help reduce weight and are impervious to the elements, and in particular salt. Indeed the bearings are made out of ceramic and it is well known they tolerate higher temperatures and are stronger than steel. Another common weakness with many reels is the gap between the spool and cage and also potential wobble. Once again this is not the case with the Nautilus NV; it is the nearest to perfection in reel technology. Finally it has the looks to die for with aircraft grade aluminium spool and cage set against a jet black reel seat, knob and drag system.
I have tested the NV G7 over several seasons now and cannot fault it. Salmon, sea trout, bass, bonefish and snook have all been hauled in with ease and during the fights the smoothness when giving line has been extraordinary. Poetry in motion.
This is a reel that will last one a lifetime and, like a luxury car, you will never question its capabilities for it will do exactly as required with lots spare.
