They say timing is everything and I am sure Sage would have agreed when they first unleashed the SP on the fly fishing world.
It was 1994 and the year that “the” film hit cinemas and inspired a whole new bunch of fly anglers to gear themselves up, hit the great outdoors and catch a few trout just like Brad Pitt did.
Of course the other thing in Sage's favour, other than a huge upsurge in anglers clamouring for gear, was that it was a damn fine rod. The range covered just about everything a trout angler would need from the smallest streams, largest rivers and biggest lakes and some 10 or so years after production ceased there is still demand for this range of rods.
The medium actioned blank is smooth to cast and a pleasure to fish with all day. It probably feels a bit heavy compared to todays blanks but we are talking about rods that they stopped making in 2001. That having been said, it is always good to see them on the river bank from time to time. It is probably one of the few rods that you could genuinely call a rod for life and actually mean it.
Just take a look at any classifieds sections of a forum and if you are lucky enough to see one offered I’ll place my very fragile reputation on the fact that there will be a follow up comment from a proud owner extolling the virtues of their own SP.
Many feel the 9ft 6wt is the pick of the bunch but ask any hardened sea trouter and they will probably argue that the 10ft 7wt is right up there with some of the best.
Either way we think this is one of the greats. Sage SP. We salute you!
