Fly Fishing Outside The Box by Peter Hayes is a book full of hints, tips and experience from an angler who has put in the hours, caught the fish and wants to share his extensive knowledge drawn over a long period of time on the water.
It is the sort of book I like. It isn’t an out and out "how to" book but more along the lines of "this has worked for me, this is how I rationalize it and go ahead and try it if you want to."
You might agree with some of the chapters, some perhaps not but if nothing else it will bring a healthy debate among anglers about what Peter has written about and as a result may make you think about things a little differently which I am sure is exactly what he wants you to do.
Within the 263 pages there are some real gems of information that includes fly recipes, how fish eat, fishing so the fish can’t see you, playing and netting big trout plus a whole lot more stretching across 22 chapters.
As someone who keeps at best a vague fishing diary I read with interest how Peter keeps maps of the stretches of river he fishes most and marks exactly where he caught fish along with where he has spotted them too.
The book is packed with plenty of photos including a beautiful sequence of a rising trout in the Derbyshire Wye.
So would I recommend the book? The answer is a resounding yes. I think it would be difficult for an angler of any ability to read it and not take away something from it.
