ESF contributors Chadd VanZanten and Russ Beck have just published their new fishing book 'On Fishing The Northern Rockies'. We sat down and took a look. Could we put it down? Read on.
If you are a regular reader of Eat, Sleep, Fish you’ll know contributors Chadd VanZanten and Russ Beck.
Their new book 'On Fishing The Northern Rockies' has just been published and continues on a similar theme to the articles you will have read here.
The 144 page book is a collection of essays covering their fishing experiences across the American West but also cleverly intertwined with just the tiniest glimpse into their lives off the water too. Perhaps they have used fly fishing as a metaphor for life and the successes and failures we all endure.
One thing is for sure though, there is a rich vein of humour that runs throughout each piece sometimes making you nod and smile in agreement and in others you will laugh out loud.
They are both talented writers that capture the essence of why we enjoy fly fishing so much and you will empathise with many of the situations they find themselves in.
Comradeship is an important aspect of the book too. From the friend who looks like he hasn’t a clue on the water (he does) to the road trip that lurches from one disaster to another you’ll read and wish you were along for the ride. They are the sort of people I’d like to fish with or have the good fortune to bump into on a river, drink some coffee with and talk.
Fishing isn’t about what you catch. It is about much more than that and Russ and Chadd know this and convey it beautifully with great skill and wonderful sensitivity.
'On Fly Fishing The Northern Rockies' will appeal to just about any fly angler out there; it is too good not to. I hope we will see more from them but in the meantime do yourself a fishing favour and buy it. You won’t regret it.
