Pete Tyjas reviews a new book on nymph fishing by Jonathan White
I think the fishing fraternity has been waiting for a book like this for a while now but does Nymphing - The New Way by Jonathan White deliver?
The 152 page book takes you through the evolution of nymphing from Polish to Czech to French and explains the differences and nuances. There are a variety of mouthwatering pictures from New Zealand to the UK via the US too.
Jonathan describes tackle for the differing disciplines, leader set-ups along with pros and cons of each set-up too. There is also a section on flies along with dressing details.
It looks as though the text has been carefully thought through and Jonathan has looked at techniques and how to over-come a situation like wind for example, when fishing a long French leader. It would be easy to skirt around this. Little details like this will help an aspiring nymph angler.
There is also some good advice regarding fishing dries and duo on a French leader too. I was reading a section thinking that it would be nice to have a diagram to show what he was explaining and turned over the page and there it was. Good job.
At the back of the book he has spoken to a number of the best nymph anglers and given them a sort of interview that includes a little about them, the tackle they use and their top tips. A really good idea. It was also nice to see ESF contributor Stan Mankov included.
Nymphing The New Way is the perfect introduction for the fly angler looking to add a new technique to their arsenal but it also has plenty for the nymph angler with a few seasons under their belt to gain something from.
In answering my opening question yes, the book does deliver and for £20 is excellent value.
