Sam Baycock starts a new monthly coloumn where he takes a look at what is going on in fly fishing
Welcome to the first edition of The Eddy, where we are hoping to bring a regular column to ESF, pooling interesting things we’ve seen, read or heard in the world of fishing. There’s so much to talk about in fishing, our sport has an international coverage and includes a diverse array of species, techniques and technologies.
I wanted to open with introducing a book I recently finished. For anyone who thinks a little deeper than just catching fish, you’ll love this. From fisheries biology to photography, this book has it all, and goes into tremendous depth with regards to trout behavior and how this affects our fishing. ‘What a Trout Sees – A fly-fishing guide to life underwater’ by Geoff Mueller is a guaranteed great read. It really has made me question the way I fish, and has given me a greater understanding of my most frequented target, the trout species.
As a BSc graduate, I am actively engaged in scientific research and constantly on the look out for new insights, findings and projects where I might learn something new. Obviously, the love of fishing and science overlap in certain places, and I’m never far from scientific research in relation to fish. My 3rd year dissertation was based around sea bass populations, and we all know what a hot topic this is right now! So I thought I’d bring you an update from the Save Our Sea Bass website, who have declared progress in the fact that the EU Commission have accepted that a proposed net ban could be implemented to the North Sea populations. I don’t like being political, because it generally means bad vibes, but as an angler, you have an invested interest in the future of our fisheries so this could be of interest to you! Have a read and form your own opinions on the matter.

Finally, I do love a fishing video! I’d like to bring you a pike fishing video from Matt Dunkinson. After all, it is winter and the brave (or crazy) anglers will be braving the weather in search of a crocodile! Perhaps this will stoke the fire a little and get you out there!
