Pete Tyjas takes a look at the new nymphing DVD, Modern Nymphing
Devin Olsen and Lance Egan take us to their classroom on the river and talk us through Euro nymphing and how best to get the most from this technique.
They carefully explain the little nuances and subtleties that will make the difference to even the most experienced nymph angler. Every segment takes place stream-side and that allows us to see exactly what they are demonstrating and how it works, often ending with a fish on the end of the line.
I really enjoyed how they explored the trout's environment, current flows and reading water. They also look at and explain clearly how to vary the presentation of their flies for maximum efficiency in a variety of differing fishing scenarios.
Having the two presenters explain their two “go-to” set ups for nymphing was interesting not least because they are a little different.
It really feels as though they have looked at their subject closely so that everything is covered from fly selection dependent on water they are fishing, casting the flies, fishing them effectively to hooking, playing and landing a fish. Each of the subjects is covered with plenty of information and as I mentioned before, being able to see the techniques described used in a “real” fishing environment is hugely useful.
It is clear that although they both come from competition fishing background that their motivation is not just catching numbers they also care for their quarry deeply.
There is a huge amount packed into the 1 hour 22 minutes of running time and I feel sure that you’ll walk away having learnt something new, no matter how experienced you are, then you can dip back in again and again to dig out another nugget of information or just to enjoy watching them fish their rivers.
I think this will be the standard others will now be judged by. Good job guys.
