Welcome to Issue 54

Fishing, for me at least, has taken a bit of a back seat. I did get a couple of days away with some good friends that you'll be able to read about in this issue but most of my time has been taken up taking guests out on to the river Taw in search of trout.

As the mayfly hatch goes it hasn't been one of the very best years I have experienced although we have caught some nice fish. Often at this time of year I will fish just one or two patterns, tie them on and see if the fish like them as much as me.

This year though I have had to work a little harder to find those fish and here is the strange thing. The harder it is the more I seem to enjoy it.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing nicer than landing the first fish of the day but I seem to really like the challenge of difficult conditions. Sure, it is nice when you have big fish wallowing over mays but I really like to be tested to see if I can find a fish for my guests.

It may just be something to do with my age and the fact that I relish the challenge rather than the numbers, I don't know, but the tricky fish under the tree in the back eddy has a real attraction for me both as an angler and as a guide. Yup, must be my age!

Hope you enjoy this issue as much as me.

Good fishing
