Friend of ESF Glen Pointon is well known on the Dove (amongst many other rivers) and writes an amusing and informative blog that we really enjoy. He has taken his blog further still by putting together a podcast that talks about fishing, interviews fellow fishermen and also has music too. We caught up with Glen to find out some more.
Was doing the podcast a logical next step from your blog?
My blog has been a massive part of my life for seven years now and I still love doing it. Without my blog I would not have met the magical fisherman I am in touch with from all over the world, I even ended up with Jamie Oliver in a boat last year down to my blog!
I suppose the podcast is a step foward in my online fishing fun but it was not the reason I got into it, I was not looking for something else it just came to me.
The idea came from a mate of mine, Andy Wareham who is into his streamer fishing and he listened to some American podcasts and sent me a few links to listen to.
I really enjoyed listening to them on the way work and in bed at night on my iPhone but their style of fly fishing is quite different to ours and there were no UK ones to be found.
This is where my idea came to me to see if I could possibly do it!
We like the idea of music as well, is that a big part of your life?
Music is something I have always loved, I used to play in an indie band locally, playing rhythm guitar. Infact the jingle at the start of the podcast is me in my tying room!
The main reason for the music, I hope, is that I imagine a fisherman driving to work with their headphones on listening to the music, fishing stories and interviews too.
I know it's hard to please everybody because peoples' taste in music is completely different.
Is a podcast easy to do?
The podcast is not easy to do, I am very in tune with computers and it did take me a while to get my head around the software.
The hardest part though was interviewing. I practised with my family and I found all people freeze when a mic is shoved in their face. I was trying my best to be professional but on listening back to them it was awful so I went for the free style approach as if I was talking without a mic. This turned out to be the best thing I did and made my podcast different from all of the other USA ones. It's a bit raw but it's real and people are enjoying that, reading though the emails I have had, not just from the UK but from around the world.
How often are you putting the podcasts out?
I am working on doing two podcasts a month as I write this but I have done four this month to get it started. I want to have some episodes in front of me so I can relax! I managed to meet my idol Stewart Croft the other week and did a amazing interview with him, I think I was more nervous than he was!
Is the podcast going to be mainly about river fishing?
The podcast is on anything related with a fly rod, my area of fishing is mainly rivers on dry fly but I will be panning it out to all other areas when possible. Pike on the fly is big at the moment in early season and I have some interviews lined up for that too.
I am doing this for the love of fishing like you guys do. People ask me why I do all this but there is one reason. I have so many ideas and stories to tell of my fly fishing I think I would go insane if I did not share them with fellow anglers. After years of dry fly fishing I have never lost the buzz, even today I watched a rising fish and my heart started to pound as much as my float going under as a child on the river 30 years ago!
