As fishing guides and instructors we get to try lots of different gear on a day to day basis, some good and some not so. Below is some of this 'good stuff' we put our hands in our pockets for and use on a regular basis. If you have some 'good stuff' you'd like to share please let us know and we'll put it in future issues.
Jim likes Myran Fly Boxes
Clear strong plastic boxes from Umpqua. Tough but simple in construction they're very strong and have excellent hinges for longevity.
I find them ideal to hold my dry fly and spider patterns without the fear of crushing some of the more delicate hackle and tail materials.
Available from most fly tackle retailers you'll not need to break the bank to own a few.
With a 'Less is more' approach my favourite is the 1120 model. Sportfish
Jim likes Vision Koma Fly Reels
This has become one of two firm favourites to use on my 10ft #2, #3 & #4 outfits.
My choice is the #6/7 which weighs in at 6.63oz and is nothing short of a perfect balance for the rods I use for todays modern nymphing techniques. Ultra light reels are not what I look for to match rods 10ft and more...
Of die cast semi machined construction with a disc drag to stop most of what you'll catch, they retail at a reasonable £75 or there about.
Available in champagne or black they'll also double up as a good stillwater reel allowing you to apply to it the #7/8 spare spool. Sportfish
All be it a bit lighter the #7/8 Vision 'Deep' reel is well worth a look and comes in cheaper still!
Jim & Pete like Costa 580 Man 'O' Wars
I kicked myself when I first picked up a pair of these. Only because I realised I should have done it years ago. I've worn many lenses and styles in my time but for me these surpass all that I've used before, even more so now as mine have prescription lenses due to an ageing eyesight.
Prices do vary considerably so hunting about is well worth it. I prefer the glass with copper tints for all round general use but there are many other styles and lens options available.
Steve Chance imports Costa to the UK, he often does the game fair circuit and is the man to speak to for any advice. Email Steve
Jim loves Capri-Sun far too much
For me there's nothing more boring than the taste of just water. I know that you know how important hydration is when you're out for a day fishing in either good or bad conditions. Flavours galore I like not only the drink but the fact that the package flattens to insignificance. A great alternative to flasks and bottles when preferring to travel light-ish.
They're also very cheap at around £4 for 10 (200ml), and always on offer somewhere.
