Fishing small flies by Ed Engle is by no means a new book but has recently been republished by Stackpole Books.
Reading the forward by John Gierach we quickly find out the feel of where the book will be taking us.
Although based in Colorado many of us in the UK may feel that what works on the South Platte or a spring creek will not transfer over here but I think there is a lot of information that anglers will find interesting no matter where they fish.
You may think that Fishing Small Flies will be just about the small patterns Ed uses but it is about how to fish them more than anything else and in fact, much of what he talks about is good common sense fishing that can be applied no matter what size flies you are fishing.
The 158 pages cover many aspects of fishing and I particularly enjoyed the sections on observation that include how to interpret rises and In-the-Film small fly techniques which looks at casts, the presentation of the fly and how to get yourself in the best position to make the cast.
This is a “how-to” book but we are gentle steered through ideas, not in a preachy way. I really like this and reading about how Ed guides was interesting and something I got some ideas about too.
So, this isn’t hot-off-the-press but that doesn’t matter. If you are interested in fishing smaller flies or just after some advice on fishing rivers I’d give this book a go if you haven’t already got it.
