We get the chance to read Jason Borger's new book - Single Handed Fly Casting - A Modular Approach
It seems quite some time since I first read Jason Borger’s “The Nature of Fly Casting”. Forwarding on a few years I got the chance to interview Jason about the book in the very first edition of ESF. It was a book that influenced me, not only as a fly angler but also as a fly fishing instructor.
Like many others, I have been eagerly awaiting his follow up Single-Handed Fly Casting - A Modular Approach and I am now pleased to say I have a copy in front of me.
As in his first book, Single-Handed Fly Casting follows the logical process of building casts in blocks that are easy to understand and digest.
Each cast is illustrated with drawings not photos. The illustrations are drawn from still photos and slow motion HD video frames that the author feels allows the ability to isolate key points better than photos can. What this also does is maintain consistency among each set of casts and gives the book a nice “work book” feel to it.
As before the book uses the modular system and although it might sound technical it isn’t. Essentially, what is happening is the piecing together of a cast so that it is clear how it is made and what is required to execute it.
The book has been thoroughly thought out and covers most casts you’ll need for just about every sort of fishing you’ll ever do including Spey casts and casts that will get you into hard-to-reach places.
I own a lot of fly casting books and enjoy nearly all of them but one of the very slight criticisms I have is that they always feel as though they are more aimed at a would-be instructor rather than an angler looking to learn something new and also that there is an assumption that the reader has a deeper technical competency than they may have.
Single-Handed Fly Casting doesn’t do this, someone looking to embark on the certification process will get plenty from it but also if you’re just looking to improve your casting and to up your catch rate as a result then this will be for you.
This book is written with more than a pinch of good humour, making each cast fun to learn and with more than 300 pages, there is plenty to enjoy.
I am a huge fan of the original book but the new one is even better. If you only buy one fly casting book make sure it is this one.
