Welcome to Issue 70

So that is it for the fishing season on my home river, the Taw in Devon.

It is at these times that I am sure many of us reflect on what has happened; the highs, the lows and sometimes the lost fish.

On reflection I think it has been a pretty good one, if not always consistent.

While I have been looking back, one of the highlights was the early part of the season when I was out guiding people through some spectacular hatches of olives.

I had a fly patch that had four patterns on it that I beat the hell out of. During the peak of this hatch I was guiding one of my regular guests, David from Canada. We were up on the wilds of Dartmoor and although the fishing was OK but we weren't really knocking the lights out.

The rain started to fall (perfect upwing conditions!) and I looked at David and said "what do you reckon?" We'd been on the Taw the day before and he knew exactly what I meant.

We walked back to my truck and after a quick drive we were back just as the hatch got going. It was one of the moments I won't forget. We spent a wonderful two hours or so casting to consistently rising fish that would eat our fly with great confidence.

It is moments like these that will keep me going during the winter months.

Huge thanks to George Kavanagh for the awesome cover pic.

Good fishing!
